    Great informative video. 2 questions. 1) I have my heater valved closed and vent open and I'm still getting hot air. Any thoughts? 2) I got the flexible demister tubes from Moss but they seem a tiny bit small. Did the early years use a larger tube?

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 10 місяців тому

      Gday, firstly many thanks for the compliment! The valve itself may be problematic, if its more than 5 or so years old I'd replace it. When the diaphragm goes it can be catastrophic and dump all cooling liquid! I made a blanking flange and ensure I carry a spare valve and also blanking flange and coolant ALWAYs with the right tool to remove it. The next thing to check is the function of the cable. Have someone look at the opening action as you rotate the heater valve dial open/close. For what it is worth I most leave the heater on always, I drive a roadster so the heat dissipates pretty rapidly with the added benefit of keep in the engine cooler using the car heater matrix as a sub cooler (heat exchanger)

      @@AaronG303 It was my job over 20 years ago, so i do have some experience in restoring these vehicles. Repairing what others had 'bodged up' was part of it. many thanks for your comments. I'm confident the work will last, there wasn't intent to be concours. Work carried out using this method on "everyday" vehicles used in the harsh environment here in Canada has not caused me any rework as an "unprofessional". I'm proud to say so called professional work often fails due to the lack of attention to prep and cleanliness and doesnt surprise warranty work isnt always offered on rust repairs.

    Fabulous result! I'm working my way through freshening up my 74 and it's a bit daunting as I knew nothing about MGBs before I bought it. Hey , love your videos . I currently also drive a 77 MGB B , fully restored .. would you winter drive it ? I live in Calgary AB

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 Рік тому

      G'day, many thanks for your compliments! I wouldn't be tempted to winter drive it particularly as they are so light and the little 14" tires are not winter types. These little ol cars (as you know) use a less viscous grade of oil and so that becomes also problematic in terms of the challenge it can be to start em in very cold temperatures. My work around is to use a magnetic block heater to keep the oil relatively "thin" meaning the engine doesn't have to struggle as much to turn over. I suspect if you have a 77 model the headlights wont have a great deal of power as the alternators of that period including the headlights do not produce significant amount of power to produce what I consider is necessary to light up the road in the depths of winter. Very large vehicles dominate the roads in Calgary so its a risky decision during the winter months to be out there among those big guys as they are not (generally speaking) on the lookout to be aware of such a little machine as the MGB. Enjoy your MGB as much as I ! Peace and health

    Question. Why do you have an electric fan added to the front of the radiator?

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 2 роки тому

      Gday Andre - thanks for the question. During summer here in Alberta (believe it or not) it can get very hot on the roads and especially after traveling thru mountains then being held up in "tourist" traffic potentially for long periods. The fan is manually operated (not thermostatically controlled) so I switch it on mainly when idling in hot temps and it does the job well. I also insulated the fuel lines and pots which eliminated the fuel "boiling off" and causing difficulty starting after a hot run.

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 2 роки тому

      ....and its a "blow thru" type fan (air is drawn from the fan onto the radiator) There isn't any room to fit it another way as this is a MK 1

      @AaronG303 2 роки тому

      Gday David. I've yet to look at the brakes and plan to do it during the evening this week. I'm hoping to use the warm weather today to apply some paint to the repaired area. I still suspect it is frozen pistons in the calipers (apparently not unheard of) as the master cylinder is relatively new (about 1-1/2 years old). I spoke with my main MGB contact here in Calgary and have agreed the dual non-servo upgrade would be the way to go. There is still much debate on the validity of that call (reading blogs online) however why not? I plan to be reporting my findings on next video. I've been following you channel including the repairs on yours which are 1st class, you must be thrilled with the turn around.

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 2 роки тому

      I got there in the end. Turns out a small piece of neoprene had somehow found its way into the banjo bolt, wedged itself in an blocked the flow of brake fluid. I've no idea how this came about as the dust cap from the "newish" master cylinder was discarded during installation. I can only imagine it may have been a quality issue and a loose piece was already inside the piston bore. An expensive lesson learned! I'm still replacing the the single circuit with dual just as a precaution.

      Gday Gary - thankyou very much although I've experienced a setback. One of the first dry and warm days here I took the little car out for a "safe" highway drive. I was on an merging lane going very slow, saw a little car in front of me and shoulder checking the main traffic. The little car stopped dead in front of me, I was a considerable distance behind and went to apply the brake - nothing. The pedal wouldn't depress. I didn't have time to gear down and there wasn't enough time to to swerve clear into the emergency lane. This result in considerable front end damage incl folded hood, smashed up grille, fender etc. The silver lining is that I can work and replace all of those as there is zero structural damage. I'll forensically look for the root cause as this si something I certainly dont want to chance in the future! At this point I suspect a seized master cylinder which is only about 1-1/2 years old and has worked flawlessly! Looks like I have future videos planned to progress the repairs....as you can imagine I'm gutted

I load tested (including cold cranking etc) and discovered the battery was end of life and couldn't hold a charge. Obviously this was a major contributor as to why the little car wouldn't start readily. A replacement battery has been purchased. I have negative ground and battery resides in the boot (trunk) of the car. FYI - the battery purchased was a 24F sized at 700 cold cranking amps. Cheers!

    A "pull handle" 65 MGB... very rare. Are you sure it is a 65 which began in Oct of 1964.. or a 1964 not sold until 65 and registered as same ? I note the much later rubber faced bumper guards. MGB.. Made to be driven. I drive my 1963 anytime any where, well within the threshold of safety of course. Nice car, good short story.. Hats off to your tenacity and hi to Ollie.

    • @AaronG303
      @AaronG303 2 роки тому

      Gday Jeff, you are observant which I applaud, an eye for detail. The car is a registered 65 but has the wrong overiders. When I first bought it I compared genuine chrome MGB spec with this vehicle and did pick up that difference. The explanation is straight forward. The vehicle had been in a fender bender in its previous life and the PO changed out the style of the overiders. I like the look of them but agree they arent true to the period. This is also can be validated when you compare the vision taken of the front bumpers (not true to the period) compared to the rear which are spot on (nor rubber inserts - plain chrome). I have contemplated updating the front overiders but have decided to leave that decision for another day. I'm constantly working on improvements and deliberating things in my mind, they are so fun and rewarding to work on! Per previous video I have upgraded the generator and regulating unit to alternator 85amps and extremely happy to have done it. I have calculated the correct gauge wiring and have relays and fuses as required. Many thanks for the compliments and feel free to add comments anytime!

    Earlier, after watching your series on replacing the rocker panels on your MGB, I had written that I too was about to undertake some restoration work on the floor and castle rails of my '69 MGC and was considering having a professional body shop replace the sheet metal.. You asked if I'd let you know what it cost so you could bask in the warm glow of how much you saved by doing it yourself. I said I would and now I'm keeping that promise. First of all, this is going to be an apples to oranges comparison because, while the MGB and MGC are pretty much identical from the windshield back, from the windshield forward the MCG is a whole 'nuther ballgame because of the torsion bar suspension. This is especially true of the floor which, unlike the 'B' with it's flat floor, the C-Model has partially-raised a 3-piece floor with separate sections for the footwells, seating area, and a torsion box structure underneath to spread the torque load across the bottom of the car. Given that the repair would involve cutting into structural section of the body shell I decided it to let someone more experienced handle it. So that being said, here is the breakdown. It turns out the root of the problem was a bodge of a repair made by the previous owner. I thought he had replaced the forward section of floor with a simple piece of sheet metal but, instead, all he had done was weld a piece of metal over top of the rotting floor. In his defense, proper floor panels were probably unavailable when he did this. I had to have a pair of panels made (cost: $250.) There were a couple of small holes in the Castle Rails - a dime-sized hole on the left and a quarter-sized hole on the right - which, on closer inspection, were caused by rust falling from the old floor above raining rust down and blocking the drain holes in the front of the castle rail and causing the adjacent areas to corrode.. After taking the fenders off I found the structure of the car was basically sound. and the rocker panels solid. I got the restoration shop to install the new floor panels and they reckoned they could patch the castle rails because, other than the aforementioned two small holes, they were solid. Lastly there was a bad section on the left side of the transmission tunnel - again from the old floor rusting away, for which, no repair panels being available, they would have to do some fabrication work for the repair. I made a deal where I would do the disassembly and reassembly of the car and also I'd provide the necessary parts (I live in a hotbed of classic American Cars but few if any shops have ever dealt with old British sports cars, so they don't know where to get parts.) I ordered two British Motor Heritage castle rails from The Roadster Factory to use as material to patch the rusty section. In addition I also ordered a right-side battery mount because I didn't like the looks of the old one and thought as long as I was having body work done I might as well replace that too, The car was n the shop for two weeks and the final labor charge was $2,200. The parts from the Roadster Factory were an additional $550. So, bottom line, it cost about $3,000 to do the rust repairs and now the car is solid metal from stem to stern. Now I just have to put everything back together.

      G'day Potkas...many thanks for the update and informative detail. It seems these little British cars have so much in common when it comes to deterioration then again unique in the surprises we find once we dive deep! Previous owner work has always been a bit of an enigma to me, and I have to remember to put things in context. That is pressure on our different levels of access to financial resources as well as priorities from family and others. I'm very pleased you are moving ahead with everything, it is intrinsically rewarding and highly likely the investment wont be returned in $$$ but wonderful nostalgic driving experiences! It also brings me great pleasure when the odd driver asks me about my little car and the memories they have of their past experience. Peace and health!

    Bravissimo on your restoration but I have to tell you it's the stuff of nightmares. I restored an '69 MGC a few years ago replacing the electrical system, interior, rebuilding the engine, exhaust system and replacing many if not most of the components under the car. But I passed over the rust underneath because it didn't look that bad and I wasn't really capable of doing the body work. Fast forward to today and I have an appointment this week at the body shop to get an estimate on what it would take to repair the castle rail and the floor. Watching your series on Replacing the Sills had me breaking out in a cold sweat. I have this vision of having to start over again by disassembling everything and staring over. At least I can say I now know what I didn't know back then.

      Man many thanks! All that work over a Canadian winter and much of the time -15C in the garage, you could say I was "driven" (terrible pun I know). The replacement of the sills was daunting to start with but concerns eased with comparing my work benchmarking it with others and it seemed to be up to quality. Thank goodness I started the work on the passenger side which as it end up had much less rust damage than drivers side. The work doesnt end...I worked on the door internals today and replaced seals, welded up an emerging crack of doom on the door and resprayed. Good luck with the estimate PLEASE advise me what you are quoted and hopefully they will be as thorough with paint sealing as I have been, I can sleep at night knowing how fussy I was to ensure I did as good a job as I could! I also had underneath under sealed and I dont regret that move at all. I can see in my future lifting the engine to replace the clutch and fix some oil leaks but for now its time to enjoy....peace and health man!
